  1. Do you have a video on how to make a ball ride the rail down to a pocket by shooting it at an angle like you did on the 9 ball? I can never seem to get that to work. It only ever seems to make the target ball bounce back from the rail and completely ruin the shot.

  2. Many players mistakenly call these spins english. Both expressions may be combined to explain the point of the cue ball aimed at for a shot. A player asked What sort of english did you use? might respond, High left english or A bit of bottom right english, etc. to explain that both top or bottom spin and sidespin was applied.
Call it what you want, but many players still call this english.

  3. That shot isn’t the best example of draw vs follow.

    1. If you get to the point where you’re actually learning draw and follow, either shot would’ve been easy, neither would be a “better” shot.

    2. IF you were straight in, it would have been a “better” choice to draw it back. I’d rather take a cut than a scratch.

    3. Rolling the ball with a center ball hit would’ve given you great position as well.

    4. There’s no such thing as top “English”. English refers to the x-axis of the cue ball.

  4. @getlois: for the drawback, you get a cleaner screwback if you have cue as low down as possible, with it under your chin and follow through. Snooker players do it all the time, they have a very different style to the American pool players

  5. thanks dean, good advice (Y)

  6. I think you got it, of course practice this stroke and see what kind of results you get, even mark where you cue ball shoule stop after making your shot. Cue ball control is very important and can make every shot easy.
    Good Luck!

  7. so when want d cue ball to follow.. one cue tip above center-a light stroke
when want d cue ball to come back.. one cue tip below center-a hard shot
when want d cue ball to move on right/left.. one cue tip right/left center

  8. You are correct, it this had been ball in hand in a real game, that’s what I would have done. Keep in mind that I was demontrating the difference between draw and follow through and thanks for the comoment

  9. hi, dean
your second draw shot, you applied some English to move the cue ball closer to the object ball, right? why don’t you just cheat the pocket for draw shot, i think the cue ball will move closer also to the object ball, what is the difference?

  13. Is this chunky bit on the joint side? if it is this is a join protector, you can get them online to fit your 2-piece or 3-piece cue. Let me know if this is what your talking about and thanks for the comment.

  17. hi deans your really helping me in my pool game, i have a question. on tv the pros have really good cues. say like ralf souquet with a predator 2 piece pool cue, on the end of the shaft theres a chunky bit, what is and how can i get one?

  18. I’m actually not sure is there more sheep than people in Ireland, probably is !! How can I get your DVD? Me personally I am good at banking, or as we over here call it, the double.

  19. It depends on who you ask…read on
Bottom English (or screw shots as referred to by the Brits)
The same applies to every type of English you apply but trying to put the right amount of English on the ball to get the cue ball into the correct posistion is a matter of experience and adapting to different tables.
I hope this helps, keep me informed of any improvements.

BTW – I loved Ireland, just visited with my father in April last year, I’m told there is more sheep than people… is that true? Take Care and Good Luck with your Pool Game

  21. actually draw and follow are not considered english.

  22. great videos man. really helping my game. Will you have more videos on Youtube coming up? Michael from Ireland

  23. Yes you should keep the cue level unless you have to elevate the cue for a masse shot, jump shot or to avoid a push shot etc… In this shot I was simply demonstrating where to hit the cue ball when executing a “Draw Shot” which you can shoot any way you like as long as you achieve the same result. I do bend the rules occasionally but only if I can get away with it…
Thanks for the comment and good luck with your game

  24. Yes, a level cue stick is better for accuracy, considering the distance of my shot I wasn’t to concerned about accuracy I was just demonstrating two different types of english, follow through (top) and draw (bottom)both can also be shot with a level cue –
Thanks for the comment and if you have a tip you would like to send in I would be glad to mention you in the next round of “Dean’s Pool Tips”

  25. Obviously you’re a pretty good player. But I don’t agree with elevating the cue unless absolutly nessesary. i have one of the best draw shot techniques around where I’m from. Sometimes it is nessesary to elevate. But don’t you think a level cue is better for accuracy?
